Do Not Be Wise in Your Own Eyes. You are not Smarter than God

Updated: Nov 4, 2024

For centuries, people have tried to explain the existence of the universe without God. And yet, the Bible has already made it very clear how the universe came to be (Genesis 1). Now, there isn’t anything wrong with trying to understand science in more intellectual manner. Common fact: the most intellectually smartest people are atheist who study science; just to name a few: Baruch Spinoza (Pantheist Advocate), Charles Darwin (although we don’t believe in evolution), Bertrand Russell, Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins, and the like. To be quite frank, I wouldn’t be able to hold an intellectual conversation with these people on the basis of science and math and yet, the Bible says people as these are fools based on their common background: a non-beliefs in the One True God.

“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools

‭‭Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭18‬-‭22‬ ‭NIV‬‬

I’m sure at some point, all these people thought they were doing a good thing based off their belief: their research, the scientific finding, implementing change in the world through education and society. But why does the Bible call them fools?

To Define Fool: someone who acts unwisely.

To Define Wise: having experience, knowledge and good judgement.

What God sees as good judgement is someone knowing there is a God, and searching for Him, to find Him. Having knowledge isn’t a bad thing, it’s when it’s misdirected, then it hinders you from knowing true knowledge.

“Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know.”

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭8‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭5‬:‭21‬ ‭NIV‬‬

See, being a fool is a moral deficiency issue, not an intellectual one. The sin of being puffed up by knowledge but not saved is very dangerous because there’s pride in thinking there is no God, that scientist or ““atheist” have figured it out.” When in reality, their missing the bigger picture… God created everything and there is literally hell that awaits people who are caught up in their own pride to believe there isn’t a god, and if they do believe, and simply not care to know who this God is that created everything then they’re in the same boat.

PRACTICAL: Do not be wise in your own eyes. Your intelligence can be what condemns you. It’s ok not to know everything. You are not God. There is a God and you for sure, are not smarter than Him. Read the Bible and do what it says. - James 1:22

What’s encouraging is, when believers go to heaven, it’s a place of constant learning, growing, and knowing. While I may not dedicate my life to learning science, and complex math, I’m sure once I get to heaven. I’ll not only be wise in God’s eyes but I have enough hope that I’ll be intellectually smart to hold conversations about quantum physics, atoms, and black holes. 🌚✨

“For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13‬:‭12‬ ‭NIV‬‬
